Shock Wave Therapy
As one of the UK’s leading small animal orthopedic referral clinics, we use Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy to accelerate the healing process and treat certain chronic conditions.
What is shock wave therapy?
A shock wave is an extremely strong pressure wave that pulses for a very short time (circa 10 milliseconds). The pulse is so strong, it breaks the sound barrier and creates the shockwave that transfers into the designated area of the body. The use of shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been around for many years and its uses are plentiful. The way it works is by interacting with tissues creating microfractures, which in turn cause a new inflammatory response. This effect is beneficial for tissue repair, regrowth and improved mobility.
How do we use shockwave therapy?
Shock wave therapy can be used to manage chronic tendon and ligament injuries in dogs by breaking down calcified deposits, which can cause stiffness and pain in limb tendons. As therapy assists with pain, swelling, and inflammation in the limbs, it is often used in conjunction with medication or other therapies.fnf
The level of intensity will depend on the severity and discussed treatment of your pet. Sedation is sometimes used to keep your pet comfortable and stress free during therapy, and we will make sure you are happy with our plans.
